On 14 March 2025, a group of MBA students from University College Dublin (UCD) attended an exclusive session at Weston Robot, where they gained firsthand knowledge of the rapidly evolving robotics industry. The session was led by Weston Robot’s Chief Scientist, who provided a comprehensive overview of the global robotics landscape, covering advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, and deep-tech innovations. The discussion focused on the intersection of robotics and investment, highlighting the immense opportunities available in this high-growth sector. Students learned about the key factors that drive robotics adoption, including labor shortages, rising automation demand, and technological breakthroughs in machine learning and hardware integration. With real-world case studies, they explored how robotics is transforming industries such as logistics, healthcare, and security, offering new investment frontiers.

Beyond technological advancements, the Chief Scientist delved into investment strategies specifically tailored for deep-tech robotics. The discussion emphasized the importance of understanding the long development cycles, capital-intensive nature, and regulatory landscape of robotics startups. Students gained insights into the various funding stages, from early-stage venture capital to growth-stage private equity, and the role of government grants in supporting innovation. Additionally, the session highlighted success stories of robotics unicorns and the critical factors that set them apart, including strong intellectual property, scalable business models, and strategic partnerships. The interactive session encouraged students to ask questions and explore the real-world implications of investing in deep-tech robotics.

A key takeaway from the session was the guidance on where to find or join the next unicorn in the robotics industry. The Chief Scientist provided a roadmap for identifying promising startups by analyzing key market trends, technological differentiators, and leadership teams. He also discussed the role of accelerators, incubators, and research institutions in fostering disruptive robotics innovation. The session concluded with practical advice on networking within the robotics investment ecosystem, including attending industry conferences, engaging with venture capitalists, and leveraging online investment platforms. For the MBA students, this session was a unique opportunity to bridge academic theory with real-world investment strategies, equipping them with the tools to make informed decisions in the deep-tech sector.
