A critical challenge for legged robots on sand is stability and power efficiency. Loose, shifting sand can cause leg sinkage and increased torque on actuators. Unitree Robotics’ engineers have equipped the B2 with specialized, wider-profile wheels and tuned its gait algorithms to distribute weight more effectively, preventing sinkage and ensuring stable traversal across the beach’s varied inclines.

The demonstration showcased a powerful trifecta of technologies essential for real-world deployment:
5G Connectivity & Edge Computing: Leveraging Singapore's robust 5G network, the B2 transmits high-fidelity sensor data, including LiDAR and video streams, to a remote control center with ultra-low latency powered by Weston Robot's Remote Assisted Driving Toolbox. This allows for real-time monitoring and high-level supervisory control, while onboard processing handles immediate navigation decisions.
Advanced Autonomous Navigation: The robot is capable of utilising a fused sensor suite of LiDAR, cameras, and GPS to build a real-time map of its environment. Its algorithms are specifically trained to identify and navigate around obstacles unique to a public beach, such as deck chairs, people, and tidal changes, ensuring a safe and reliable patrol path.
Extended 5-Hour Operation: For practical applications like security patrols or environmental monitoring, endurance is key. Weston Robot has integrated a high-capacity battery solution, enabling the B2 to conduct extended missions for up to five hours on a single charge, covering significant stretches of Sentosa’s coastline autonomously.
This successful trial marks a significant step beyond controlled indoor environments. It demonstrates that with the right integration of hardware, software, and connectivity, legged robots are ready for demanding outdoor applications, from public safety and tourism to coastal surveying.
